Chapter 1

Dear Diary,

The most unpleasant occurrence has happened to me.  I am not exaggerating at all.  My loving grandfather passed away today.  God may he rest in peace.  I never thought this could ever happen to anyone, especially me.  I never really thought of it happening.  My grandfather, William Baker, was a strong and educated man.  He was always trying to do the best for people, even if he does not like to.  He knew everyone, for he was one of the most social men I have ever yet to meet.  My grandfather always had a lesson to teach for he used to be a teacher.  Most of all he was the best grandfather you could ever imagine to have.

Sincerely,

Eleanor E. Baker

Everything was gloomy and dark on that November day all around the plantation.  Everyone was mourning or busy preparing the funeral already.   Eleanor's mother, father, youngest brother, James (who was two years of age), and Eleanor huddled around her grandfather's corpse and we held each others' hands and prayed.

"Lord, may you bless Mr. William Baker's soul for he has done the best he could on your earth.  May thy help guide thee to Heaven where our destination will be someday too, and we will be all together, forever, as a true family," Eleanor's father spoke as his voiced echoed across David's Pond and over all the fields of vegetables so all could hear and pray with them.

Eleanor looked at her black buckle shoes through the tears in her eyes.  She could not gaze up to face the young, for if he saw his hope was weeping he would wail.  She listened to her father's words of praise and grief carefully.  Eleanor gripped a piece of her crimson colored wool cloak.  It not only provided warmth from November.  It created a vision for Eleanor, her grandfather's spirit hugging her.  Whispering in the wind, "It shall be fine my dear."  Though, tucked in her heart was a pinch of melancholy.

"Amen," said the Baker family together.  "Amen," Eleanor spoke silently in her heart.  Eleanor's parents headed back to the main house.  Her father to write under candlelight as the sun set with his new feather pen.  He planned to write to his brother, Adam, who was part of a town militia in Yorktown.  Adam told him about the taxes and the outburst of many townsfolk.  Though, the letters would be the past, not the present.  It might take weeks for letters to travel between the brothers.  Eleanor's Mother would help the servants clean the table after dinner they never had.   James stumbled back into the house, confused, trying to look for toys.

"Inspiring words Charles," Eleanor's mother spoke softly to the father as he headed in with his Holy Bible in one hand.  "Dear Eleanor, are thy alright?  Elly?"

Eleanor's gripped her mother's hand so tightly she felt okay.  Once her mother started loosening the grip and walk away Eleanor cried out, "Wait!  Don't leave me!"

Her mother looked around to her daughter looking surprised.  Eleanor murmured, "Please…" as she looked up to see her mother's eyes were full of tears looking at her.  They stepped toward each other and hugged each other tightly.

"I promise Elly I will never leave you, do not worry t'all," Eleanor's mother spoke peacefully.  "Eleanor," she said as she stepped away still holding both of Eleanor's hands, "You know even though I might not be there always physically with you, I will still be there."  Her mother un-did her locket necklace around her neck and put it around Elly's neck and smiled as she slowly walked inside the house.

Eleanor sat down on the grass beside David's pond holding the locket close to her.  She gazed across the pond seeing the blue water.  She took a smooth pebble and threw it out into the pond.  As it skimmed the smooth water it created ripples until sinking down into the pond.  Why?  Why did he have to leave me!  How did he even die?  Nobody told me, nobody.  Can't they trust me!  They do not wish to tell me anything.

After sitting down and thinking about what occurred Eleanor headed back toward the main house where she would have time to write more and figure out an answer.
